Planning it far enough ahead to matter
Leave is usually known weeks in advance, which is enough time to arrange a proper handover shift, update the site instruction and tell the client. What actually happens on many sites is that the arrangement is made the week before, the covering cleaner has never seen the building, and the first three nights are consumed by them working out where things are. All of that was avoidable.
The useful lead time is around a fortnight. That allows a cross-training shift where the covering cleaner works alongside the regular one, an update to anything in the site instruction that has drifted, and notice to the client with a name. None of those take long individually, and together they change the experience of the fortnight completely. None of it is difficult, and all of it becomes impossible in the last few days before leave starts.
